What is Dialysis?
Dialysis is a medical process designed to restore normal fluid and electrolyte levels in the body by removing unwanted substances from the blood or adding deficient components. This is achieved by bringing the patient’s blood into contact with a specialized dialysis solution through a semi-permeable membrane.
The Dialysis Team
Dialysis treatment is carried out by a dedicated team of professionals with diverse skills, training, and perspectives, working together to ensure optimal patient care.
The dialysis team typically includes:
Nephrologist
Cardiovascular Surgeon
Hemodialysis Specialist Physician
Hemodialysis Nurse / Dialysis Technician
Support Staff
Dialysis Machine
A dialysis machine consists of two main components:
Extracorporeal (Outside the Body) Blood Circuit:
Uses an arteriovenous (AV) fistula to draw blood from the patient.
Blood is passed through a dialyzer and returned to the patient via the venous side of the AV fistula.
Includes monitors and pumps for precise control.
Dialysis Fluid Circuit:
Prepares and monitors the dialysis solution.
Facilitates processes like diffusion, osmosis, and convection, which are essential for effective hemodialysis.
Consumables for Dialysis
Dialysis requires specialized consumables to ensure safe and effective treatment, including:
Dialyzer
Arterial-Venous (AV) Set
Arterial-Venous Fistula Needles
Dialysate
